Porto Maurizio was in the Middle Ages an autonomous municipality, although linked by close pacts of alliance and dependence to the nearby powerful Republic of Genoa, known throughout the Mediterranean for the production but especially the olive oil trade. After the Napoleonic period it was annexed to Piedmont and then joined the Kingdom of Italy.
In 1923 it merged with Oneglia and other smaller towns into the new municipality of Imperia.
